Rat vs Mouse: How to Tell Which One You Have

By the Pittsburgh Pest Control team · Updated 2026-10-20

Rats and mice need different treatment, so identifying the animal is the first step. Droppings are usually the clearest clue.

In Pittsburgh, rats are more often tied to yards, alleys and basements near burrows, while mice are the usual problem inside rowhouses, apartments and finished kitchens.

Mouse droppings and what they tell you

Fresh droppings are dark and moist looking, older ones are gray and crumble. Scattered droppings along walls and inside cabinets point to regular travel routes. Wear gloves and a mask, and use damp paper towels or a HEPA vacuum rather than sweeping, so dust does not spread.

Why the difference matters

A trap or bait station placed for a mouse will not stop a rat, and the sealing material differs. Mice need openings closed down to about a quarter inch, including gaps behind radiator pipes and under sinks. Rats need metal or masonry at the foundation and burrow treatment outside.

If you are not sure, a professional inspection identifies the species before anything is placed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell mouse droppings from rat droppings?

Mouse droppings are small and rice sized. Rat droppings are larger and capsule shaped, about three quarters of an inch.

Can I have both rats and mice?

Yes. Basements and ground floors can have rats while upper floors have mice, and each needs its own plan.

Are young rats the same as mice?

No. Young rats still have large feet and heads for their body size, while adult mice have small bodies and large ears.
